Conflict in the Educational System

Simply put, education is paramount. On the individual level, it provides one with the capability to obtain a profession, which is essential for survival. Yet more importantly, on a larger scale, it provides the foundation upon which society can build and advance. This significance appears to be lost within this nation, as evidenced by the current problems tied to our educational system. As discussed in class, one of these problems confronting the system is the disparity between certain schools.                                                                  Being fortunate enough to attend schools not burden by the conditions arising from crippling financial debt and “ineffective teachers”, I can honestly say I’m satisfied with my educational experience. My teachers generally provided clear, efficient lessons that only required me to pay attention. Furthermore, these lessons’ effectiveness was only reinforced with access to quality supplies, books, and computers. Unfortunately though, my pampered experience in school does not resonate with everyone.                                                            Across the nation, schools being left to deteriorate as students continue to attend. Ranging from the infamous public schools of Chicago, which produce high dropout rates and severely low test scores, to less publicized rural schools that fare no better, one can see the affect of neglected schools. It does not stop there however. Besides schools on the fringe of collapse, there are others that have fallen apart entirely, and cease to exist, such as fifty Chicago public schools.

While there are undeniable problems with this nation’s educational system, there are those who are trying to fix it. The MDRC website: http://www.mdrc.org/publication/reforming-underperforming-high-schools provides various ways to improve the current system. While this is a step in the right direction, more will need to be done in order to fix this crisis.
