I’m going to use chapter 9 on
“to affect the odds of being incarcerated for using drugs” and compared it with
Justin Bieber arrest. Deviance is a recognized violation of the cultural norms
well crime is a violation of society formally enacted criminal law. Everyday someone
commit deviance or a crime but those that stand out the most are celebrity crimes
and deviance. We target celebrities the most because they life style is being
which 24/7 and one sip up can turn majority of their fans against them and they
could lose everything. Individual look up to celebrities as role models and
parents expect celebrities to be prefect and set good example for the public. In an article on Huffington post about Justin
Bieber show deviance and crimes he has commit and how awful he setting an example
for the youth population and the pop culture in the United State. Bieber
charges was arrested on DUI and drag racing charges which both is illegal and
on top that he is only 19 of age. The right thing about this article is that it
states one of Durkheim’s basic insight “Responding to deviance brings people
together.” Over 100,000 citizens signed
a petition to get Bieber deported back to Canada and have his green card
revoke. In the article it stated “He is
not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible
influence on our nation’s youth”.
I feel that Bieber is setting a bad example for youth and need to realize that
he is setting a bad example for those immigrants that are in the United State. And
just because Bieber is famous he is less likely to get deported back to
Canada then infamous immigrants in the United State can deported if they commit or get convicted of a crime.
I always think it is right how society is using social control which is an
attempt by society to regulate people’s thoughts and behavior. But I do find
something wrong about this article that deviance and crimes are committed
everyday but they tried to address the White House in trying to get Bieber
green card revoke. I feel people are using the Labeling Theory that is an idea
that deviance and conformity result not so much from what people do as from how
others respond to those actions. Individual
are making Bieber arrest a hug things when there are plenty of different celebrities
doing the same things Bieber doing or maybe worst. Bieber case is a symbolic interaction theory
which deviance is an individual deviant. These are Bieber problems and his
life, we should let the court system do its job and give Bieber his consequences.
And “People become deviant as others
define them that way” I have feeling everyone committed some type of crime that
violate the cultural norms. For example if you ever disobeyed your parents you
could be classified as problem child or if you talk to yourself, you can also
be classified as if you have mental ills. It doesn't matter how small or big
the crime or the deviance the people commit, nobody is perfect.
